DJ Charles Feelgood at Rich’s

If you like dance music, you would have loved the music by DJ Charles Feelgood Friday night at Rich’s. Funky, Jazzy, House music. I used to have a picture of Charles wearing an Enjoymusic Enjoylife shirt. I need to find it.

Legendary for his role in the birth of the electronic music scene in the Baltimore/Washington DC area, Charles Feelgood has built a reputation as a DJ in the international dance community through his ingenious remix skills and a dynamic brand of funky disco,electro,techno and hard house.

“I used to stay up late listening to my dad play records and decided that was what I wanted to do,” says Feelgood. His first foray into the world of dance music was in the 80’s, throwing small scale parties under the name “House of Fields”. From Depeche Mode to Aretha Franklin dance mixes - the music was very eclectic at the parties and you can hear that range of genres in Charles’s sets today.

Constantly in demand all over the world for his ability to light up dance floors with his sets of funk, acid and electro drenched house, Feelgood has received numerous accolades in his fifteen-year career. These include being named Baltimore’s Best DJ several years, and being included in Bpm magazines top 100 Dj’s several years running.Playing gigs from as far away as Russia for the Audi Car Company to working the crowd at 2007’s Cochella Festival-Charles will be busy behind the decks for the rest of the 2008 year!

Feelgood notes “I definitely try and take the listeners on a musical journey - I like to start out slow and funky and push for a harder ending, a continuous rise”.

“I’m far from a purist,” he adds. “I incorporate many styles into a single set. I play everything from disco-influenced house to acapella tracks and tech house, and I especially love bootlegs and electro influenced tracks”.

The consummated dance floor rocker, Feelgood sums up his musical mission in one sentence: “I just want to do what the name implies, to make people have a good time and go home with a great feeling”.

Best Music T-Shirt Designer Flashback

Back in 2002, the same year that Houston Press selected Chloe Dao of Project Runway fame as Best Designer, Enjoymusic Enjoylife was crowned the best club wear / music clothing brand.

Houstonian Chloé Dao spent eight years in New York City, including a stint at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Now she’s brought her talents home. She and sister Kim opened Lot 8 in the Rice Village at 6127 Kirby Drive two years ago, specializing in off-the-rack trendy clothes and local designer one-of-a-kinds. Dao has lots of her own fashion fun on the racks and offers alterations and custom designs. Her specialty is dressing you up in wedding, prom and party frocks. While she’s more downtown, compared to Vanessa Riley’s uptown designs, expect Dao to create quite a name for herself among Houston’s fashionistas.

Best Dance and Club Wear Designer - Enjoymusic Enjoylife Music T-shirts

We’ve got a horde of fine club dancers in this town. Somebody’s gotta dress ‘em. If there were still any raves around, chances are you’d see many shirts out there created by this man. Akindele’s brand of clothing, Enjoymusic Enjoylife (EMEL), featuring that all-important musical-note insignia, has been the favorite among energetic clubgoers for quite a while now. Baseball shirts, T-shirts, baby tees — they’re all designed to keep a young whippersnapper comfortable while dancing to all things electronica. Fortunately, if you head out to spots like Hyperia, you can still see clothing bearing the EMEL moniker, and a bunch of kids proud to be sweating their asses off in it.

Best Guitar Teacher - Dave Payne

Dave Payne can do just about anything when it comes to the guitar. Besides his own beautiful playing and singing, which runs the gamut from classical to funk, he’s got enough patience and good grace to teach anybody else how to follow his lead. Everybody from middle-aged engineers looking to perfect all those blues licks they’ve been working on for decades to adolescent punk rockers (that include groups such as the Collapsing Horse and Chowderheads) to teenage girls interested in pick-styled classical guitar has benefited from Payne’s good-humored teaching style and gentle manner, which make the hard work of learning how to play a whole lot of fun.
